SUMMARY:Science on Tap! Human Genomes
DESCRIPTION:Science on Tap! Human Genomes with Sean Mooney\, PhD and Wenatchee River Institute at Badger Mountain Brewing \nEvery human on earth has a unique genetic code that helps determine who we are\, what we look like\, and our overall health and well-being. This genetic code\, the human genome\, is unimaginably large\, consisting of more than three billion letters when written out. Learn more about the human genome on Thur.\, Jan. 30\, 6-7PM at Badger Mountain Brewing\, 1 Orondo Avenue in Wenatchee. \nSean Mooney\, PhD\, Chief Research Information Officer -UW Medicine\, Professor -Dept. of Biomedical Informatics and Medical Education -University of WA\, will talk about the human genome –what it means to all of us and how it can reveal family tree and ancestry secrets. Mooney has always loved science and computers\, so while in college more than 25 years ago\, he decided to make a career of it. Mooney soon became attracted to healthcare and providing opportunities to participate in projects improving people’s lives through better health. \n“The human genome is really complex! It’s not something we can just have a doctor order a test for and then report on what it says. I think what has surprised me the most is the ease with which we can now determine genetic information and that the cost is relatively low. The first human genome cost the federal government more than $100 million to sequence. We can now determine a person’s genome for less than a $1000. That’s amazing!” said Mooney. \nMooney is a 4th generation Washingtonian and outdoor enthusiast\, frequently spending time recreating with his wife in the Wenatchee Valley. “I love everything science and am constantly working with other scientists to make the world a better place. I welcome the opportunity to tell you about something that is important to all of us\,” said Mooney. \nToday\, technology advances have created opportunities to more clearly understand a person’s family history and ancestry\, predisposition to disease and overall health. Join us at Badger Mountain Brewing for this free\, mind-expanding event. Donations are appreciated and there will be a raffle benefiting WRI youth and adult educational programs. Please contact Rachel Bishop with questions\, 509-548-0181 x5 or rbishop@wenatcheeriverinstitute.org \nEvent link: https://wenatcheeriverinstitute.org/event-calendar.html/event/2020/01/30/science-on-tap-human-genomes/274104\nAdditional Links: https://www.mooneygroup.org/ and https://www.badgermountainbrewing.com/
