SUMMARY:Comparing and Contrasting Killer Whales in the Salish Sea
DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted by the North Cascades Institute \nOrca whales are an iconic species of the Pacific Northwest and in Washington’s inland waters we are lucky to have two distinct populations as our neighbors: the endangered fish-eating Southern Resident killer whales and the thriving mammal-eating Bigg’s killer whales. \nn this online presentation\, Monika Wieland Shields—co-founder and director of the nonprofit Orca Behavior Institute based on San Juan Island—will cover the natural history of both of these unique populations\, introducing you to their unique characteristics and life histories. \nIn recent decades\, as we’ve gained a new appreciation for what are really two different cultures of killer whale\, we have also learned about what it takes to live alongside a top predator in the increasingly-urbanized Salish Sea. By comparing and contrasting the trajectories of these two populations\, Monika will share what conservation lessons we’ve learned and what it will take to ensure that both populations are able to survive into the future. \nMonika is a biologist\, wildlife photographer and author of the 2019 book Endangered Orcas: The Story of the Southern Residents. She has a passion for community science and connecting people to whales\, working to combine research and storytelling in education and advocacy efforts on behalf of the orcas of the Salish Sea. \nIf you can’t make this specific date or time\, you can still register and we will send you a link to view the class on your own time! All registrants will have access to the class recording for a limited time after the program. \nTo register or for more information click here. \n

How to build and manage habitat in your garden for pollinators\, birds\, and more! \nLearn about why we should support butterflies\, birds\, and native bees and how to attract them into visiting and building a home in your outdoor space. We will also cover how to manage this space for the benefit of invertebrates\, the birds who like to eat them\, and your personal garden goals! \nAngie Orpet works for the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. She helps orchards and small fruit producers create pollinator habitat to enhance their production while making homes for invertebrates. She also connects to wider audiences of all ages to share the joy of insects and wants to help others bring more habitat into their life because it keeps things interesting. \nMore info click here.

SUMMARY:Weed Warrior-Grass Assassins
DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted by the Chelan Douglas Land Trust \n\nDate\nSat\, 05/27/2023\n\n\nTime\n8:30 AM – 11:00 AM\n\n\nLocation\nHorse Lake Reserve Trailhead\n\nWant to improve the success of our native grass restoration? Want to fit in an upper body workout before your hike or bike ride? Become a Weed Warrior – Invasive Grass Assassin! We will meet on Wednesdays\, weekly\, until about mid-June. (This one is on Saturday!) \nStop by for as long as you want to help CDLT staff hoe weeds in the restoration area near the concrete slab where the barn used to be at Horse Lake Reserve. \nWe will mainly be removing bulbous bluegrass (we need to get it before it spreads!)\, which is a shallow\, fibrous-rooted\, perennial weed that we were not able to control during the weed spray last fall. Our native basin wildrye\, Idaho fescue and bluebunch wheatgrass need your help to survive! Please join us\, even if it’s just for 15 min. We need all the help we can get. \nYou do not need to be able to recognize the different grass species – we will flag native plantings as we go and work in sections\, so you know what to hoe out and what to leave. We can also teach you some ID characteristics of each of the grasses growing in this area – both the natives and non-native. \nTo register for this event please email Tiffany Theden\, Stewardship Assistant: tiffany@cdlandtrust.org. 310-254-0067 \nThank you in advance for being as tenacious in your support of restoration as the weeds are in growing. \nHoes\, gloves\, and snacks will be provided. \n*All work parties are weather and conditions dependent. Canceled work parties will be rescheduled if possible. \nFor more information click here.
