With three decades of experience as a wildlife biologist and 25 years as a published writer, Betsy L. Howell lives at the intersection of conservation and communication. She began work in Pacific Northwest forests in the mid-1980s and worked as a wildlife biologist through the tumultuous years before and after the adoption of the 1994 Northwest Forest Plan. During this time she found her voice as a writer sharing stories about working as a woman in wildland firefighting, profiling passionate peers, and bringing to light local species and their conservation challenges.

Betsy has worked with northern spotted owls, marbled murrelets, Roosevelt elk, and a variety of amphibians and reptiles. She currently serves as a wildlife biologist on the Olympic National Forest surveying for Pacific martens, Van Dykes salamanders, and Pacific Northwest bat species and writing from her home on the Olympic Peninsula.

In this virtual program, we will hear stories of Betsy’s career including excerpts from her forthcoming book Wild Forest Home: Stories of Conservation in the Pacific Northwest and learn about her creative process as a writer.
