Note from the editor: We received this letter below by email this past week from Nikki Buzzell a health and fitness teacher at Wenatchee High School. Along with the letter were the photos below of students participating in the outdoor recreation class. The images and written words are uplifting. Thanks to Nikki for sharing.
I want to give a big thank you to Wenatchee Outdoors and our community for being so supportive for our new Outdoor Recreation fitness class. This year has been a huge success and I cannot be more grateful. This years student received lessons on rock climbing, camping, hiking, fishing, wilderness first aid, snowshoeing, skiing, snowboarding, winter survival and much much more. Our class would not be as successful without the help and support from our amazing community.
From rock climbing ropes, backpacks to pots and pans, we have received so many donations and volunteers, which made the class accessible for all students. This year we had a total of 45 students who learned so much including communication skills, leadership skills and what trust really means. On student even says “this class isn’t just like any other class, it is like a family.” That day will never leave my mind because my goal for these students is to see what a healthy lifestyle really is. Not just focusing on physical health but overall well being.
All the experiences these students had this year has spread through the school and I am proud to say that next year classes are full, totaling 68 students. The goal of this class is to get all students to have a chance at experiencing the outdoors. With that being said, through grants and support of the district and community, we are that much closer to getting a rock climbing wall at Wenatchee High School. We are so fortunate to live and work in a community filled with love and support. I cannot thank our community enough, because without you this program would not be the same.
