Pedal for a Cause
by Alan Walker
We never know what type of bikes riders will choose when participating in the Apple Century Bike Ride. In Sunrise Rotary’s 34 years of hosting the ride we have seen elliptical bicycles, recumbent, single speed Schwinn, fixed-gear, tandem and the latest high-performance road bike. But, the one thing all riders have in common is riding for a cause.
The Apple Century Bike Ride is the annual fundraising event hosted by the Wenatchee Sunrise Rotary Club to support the Challenge Scholarship Fund, local parks, and international programs to provide clean drinking water and eradicate polio. By riding with us, you help local children and families, and children and families across the globe.
The ride features three distances: the 100-mile century ride, a 50-mile half century ride and a 25-mile ride. Starting at Wenatchee’s Pybus Public Market, the route follows the scenic Wenatchee River as it winds through Monitor, Cashmere, Dryden and Peshastin until riders reach Leavenworth. The 100-milers continue on to the Lake Wenatchee Fire Station where they will turn around for the trip back to Pybus Public Market. Scenery includes high sage desert, lush orchards and vineyards, cool and clear river valleys and tall ponderosa pine forests.
The ride occurs the first Saturday in June, this year (2020) it is June 6th. The ride will take you through the Wenatchee Valley’s orchard and wine country, beautiful Leavenworth and pristine Lake Wenatchee State Park. The route is safe, well supported with food and water stops and includes an end of ride meal, festivities and multiple sag-wagon units to provide helpful supplies.
We invite you to join on June 6th, registration is open at wenatcheesunriserotary.org.
